Ok, so this is my first post on here since I got here...sorry for being a slacker. I'm going to make up for it this month though as we have a lot going on. First, here are the notes from last weeks Impact:

The Gift of Perspective

One of my great friends, Stephen Snyder, just got back from South Africa where he spent a few weeks helping missionaries in a squatter camp. You can read more about it here.

He shared a bit of his trip to our students last Wednesday night and one part of his story really struck home with me.

He told the story of a young man, about 17, who he got to know while he was there. This young man had been through more than any old man would want to. He was on his own. He had seen his aunt burned alive by a group of men, he had been abused by his dad, and he was now completely on his own.

Stephen shared how this young man called him over one night and asked Stephen if there was anything he could pray about for him. Needless to say Stephen was floored. This young man asked to pray for Stephen. Unbelievable.

You know what this young man wants more than anything? To learn to read so he can read the Bible. Unreal. This kid has seen more than many of us will in our entire lives and he simply wants to know Christ more.

One thing I have learned in my short life is this... perspective is everything. I get physically sick sometimes at the things we get upset about. The pressures we crack under. We have no idea what hardship is. We have no idea what it is to be starving, yet we say that we are everyday we eat lunch late.

So the next time we update our facebook status with how our worlds our falling apart because we had a bad day, our friends have hurt us, or our relationships don't work out, remember this. There is a young man in South Africa who wants to learn to read so he can know Christ more.

Chick-fil-a

I visited a Chick-fil-a today with my family. As usual we had a great time. I was sitting there watching my daughter play in the indoor playground and saw a case of moist towlettes hanging on the wall right beside the door of the playground. I was really impressed by this. I looked at my wife and said “I am going to write a post about what the church can learn from Chick-fil-a.” Well, a few hours later and here you have it.

Chick-fil-a is incredible. I have never had a bad time in Chick-fil-a, they are always well staffed, always say “My pleasure”, always clean, the food is unreal (especially the nuggets), and they are prepared for their guests!

Now I could probably stop right there and let you carry the analogies over, but there is so much more I want to say! Well at least a few more lines.

They know who they are serving and they make every effort to make their guests comfortable, from moist towlettes on the walls and those really good mints, to having people come by to fill your cup or carry your tray to the table. They go out of their way to make sure you want to come back.

Think hard, have you ever had a bad Chick-fil-a experience?

Come and Listen

God is moving in my life. God is moving in my wife’s life.

I am not talking about good quiet times, or consistent prayer. I am talking about a genuine move in which my wife and I are being changed. We are being dramatically changed. We are being ruined. Isaiah had a similar experience when he saw the God seated on a throne, exalted. I have to tell you it is the greatest feeling in the universe to be ruined by a Holy, Holy, Holy, God. I believe with all my heart that God is preparing us for something huge! I don’t know what it is going to be, where it is going to be, or when it is going to be, but I know that it is going to be great.

I have never been so sensitive to sin and the separation from God it results in, I have never been so open to the voice of God, I have never been so eager for a life that is far from ordinary. I am tired of living a pampered life in which I am more eager to get in debt for a car than giving to the needy. I am tired of complaining that I don’t have the latest greatest and failing to realize that I am in the top 3 percent of the world’s richest people. I am tired of warming a seat in church and never inviting anyone to sit with me. I am tired of being a professional pastor and part-time disciple of Christ.

I can’t wait to see what God is going to do in my family. I am excited to see how he uses my wife as she ignites for Him. I am excited to see what he does through me as I lead my family to the front lines for Christ. I desire to see what God will do when we start to live lives that require genuine faith in God instead of my savings account or retirement investments. I am ready to set the example for my kids to see that reading God’s Word is more important than watching American Idol, 24, Heroes, or Dancing with the Stars.

This is not about parading righteousness, this is not about reputation, this is about engaging culture and demonstrating that the Christian life isn’t about convenience, Sunday mornings, holidays, or meal time prayers.

You are invited.

God wants to work in your life just as he is in mine. He wants to move in you and leave you in ruins just like he is mine. It is never easy, but I can tell you from experience that it is the greatest, most incredible time of my life and it will be for you too. Are you ready to shake off the dust, to taste and see that the Lord is good? To break out of Christianity based on convenience? God is reaching out to you, inviting you to live an extraordinary life.

I would take him up on the offer.

You almost had it!

Have you ever met someone who seemed to have all the intangibles but never quite “got it” and never really did anything great? Even though they had all the potential in the world they never broke away from the pack. They simply remained mediocre. Or worse they consistently underachieved.

There is this guy I read about who was pretty popular. So popular in fact that all the people around him actually made him a king! Anyways, he had a ton of potential. I mean he was quite literally head and shoulders above everyone else. If anyone could have been great it was him! Sadly, the story doesn’t end with some triumphant accolades or peace for the masses. It ends with him falling on his own sword in battle. Its downright depressing.

So what was his problem? What kept him from being remembered as a great King who feared God? If we are honest with ourselves, he struggled from the same thing we struggle with. Partial obedience to God.

We are really good at compartmentalizing our faith. We bring it out on Sunday morning and say everything we are supposed to around the saints and then live like hell the rest of the week. We remain Luke warm. We remain mediocre. God wants to use us for great things, and yet because we only follow Him when its convenient we miss out on everything He wants to use us for!

I for one refuse to live like Saul anymore.

I want to be used by God for more, for things that impact all of eternity. I want to obey wholly the Word of God. I want my kids to know that I loved and obeyed God all their lives and I want them to see what God will do with one man fully committed to Him.

No matter where you are in life, its not to late to stop obeying partially. Stop giving God the leftovers. Stop saving your best for summer camp and metamorphosis.

Give God your all and he will take you farther and deeper than you could have ever imagined.

Lets not allow our lives to end with us falling on our swords in the midst of battle. Let us end our lives with a passion for God’s kingdom and hearts completely sold out to Him.

I was sitting at my desk this morning thinking about all kinds of things and I began to think about all the students and leaders in Eikon. I am a blessed pastor. Really, I am blessed beyond compare. I truly believe that I have the best students, the best leaders, and the most support and love of any Student Pastor in the world! You guys are incredible.

So I wanted to thank you guys. Thank you for being patient with me as I learn the ropes and deal with other responsibilities. Thank you for being a huge encouragement to me. Thank you for listening and asking questions and taking in the Word of God and letting it change your hearts. Thank you for surprising me with a big TV. Thank you for being a team I can count on to get things done. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for telling your friends about Christ. Thank you for the fun that you guys love to have and keeping me from being to serious. Thank you for reminding me to now sweat the small stuff, and keeping me on my knees in prayer. Thank you for continually showing me that I need Christ's help to do this.

Thank you guys for who you are! There is no where else I would rather be.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday I spent some time eating, thinking, talking, sleeping, and learning to ride a ripstik. Yes, I learned to ride a ripstik. I did pretty stinking awesome too! No really, I did. First time ripstick rider, I can go up hill! Well, little hills. Well, more like slight inclines, but I can go up them. Its all in the hip action.

Anyway, thought someone out there would give me some "your in great shape and have tremendous natural athlesticism and should have played in the NFL" points.

Elevation Time Change

What is so great about church?

This post actually started completely different from what you are reading now. Not that the first draft was bad, I mean I was on a role, but I started thinking about what I was trying to communicate and I realized something. There are probably a million other blogs saying the same thing. They probably say it better than I would, so why go that route. Instead lets talk about something else. Lets talk about what is so great about church!

I really like church. I really like coming to church. No it is not because I get paid, it is because I genuinely love it! I don’t mean love like “I love french fries” either. I mean something a little deeper. Why do I love it you might ask…well let me count the ways.

I love church because God established it! Think about this, we were made for relationships. It what we crave, its what we long for, to connect intimately with others. We were created to have a relationship with a loving, caring, just, righteous God. We long for Him, we crave Him. It is our suppression of the truth that keeps us from Him. Look at what he did. He established a means for us to connect with others and Himself! Unbelievable! I can go to church and connect in a real way with people, and I can connect with God with those people. Now, I can and should connect with God every day on my own, but there truly is something incredible about connecting in Worship of a great God with others! Nothing else like it.

I love church because it carries the Truth! I was talking with a new friend today about this. People are looking for the truth! They are looking for something that will deeply impact their lives. They are looking for something that will help, will change, will complete them. Sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll are simply ways to try to fill an emptiness. The church carries the Truth! It carries the only message that can change the human heart! Creation is cool, but the power to change the human heart is amazing! To me, that is the greatest measure of God’s power. The church carries this! It raises this banner every Sunday as a beacon of hope for those who are lost. The Truth has power, the Truth impacts lives!

I love the church because it has history. The church has been through the ringer. It has been persecuted, killed, tortured, and maimed in the name of Christ. It isn’t a fad, the latest greatest, a flash in the pan. It endures, it protects, it pushes forward, it throws down the very Gates of Hell. The church has celebrated great victories and mourned sad loses, but it has never been defeated, it has never been disbanded, it remains! The church has a rich history.

I love the church because it points to something more than ourselves. The church isn’t about the church. It is pointing to something greater, bigger, more important. It is pointing to God, more accurately a relationship with God! The church not only bears the Truth, it points to it! It directs, urges, admonishes, and encourages people to the Truth! If the church didn’t do this it would be an institution. Simply created by man for man, but it is so much more because the church is not focused on the church. The church is focused on God!

What is so great about church? A whole lot and I love it!

HABITS Recap

Well its officially over. The HABITS series is a thing of the past. So what do we do with what we have learned? I really enjoyed teaching this series. I truly believe that the things taught, can and will change your life! Here is a little recap, in case you missed.

The whole premise of the series is that your life is made up of the habits your develop. In other words the things you get in the habit of doing now will follow you the rest of your life. If you start smoking, the odds are you will smoke the rest of your life, start drinking, you will probably drink the rest of your life, cussing, looking at porno, the same thing.

On the other hand, if you start hanging out with God, making accountability partners, memorizing the Bible, involving yourself in church, tithing, and studying Scripture, you will probably do these things for the rest of your life. Your life will be directly directed by the habits you make right now.

So here is the challenge, I dare you to make the following habits in your life. I double dare you. Triple dare. But be warned, if you do, your life will be blessed by God and all that you do will prosper. So go ahead, what are you waiting for? Up to the challenge?

H - Hang out with God
A - Accountability with other believers
B - Bible Memorization
I - Involve yourself in church
T - Tithe
S - Study Scripture

What if...

I love what if questions. They really get you thinking and there is no end to the scenarios you can make up. What if...we smelled with our armpits, what if...the sky was neon green, what if...we spoke to each other in clicks and grunts, what if...well you get the idea. Its crazy to think of how different the world would be if we answered some of these what if questions.

Now for the biggie...what if Jesus had not died for our sins on the cross. That is the BIGGEST what if question anyone could ever ask. Imagine a world were there was no forgiveness of sin, no hope for a future, no answer for injustice. That is not a world I would want to live in.

Thank God we can ask that what if question. I would hate for it to be the other way around, where we were asking "What if Christ died for my sins on the cross?" We have a great God! Take a second today and thank him for the fact that we don't live in a world where there is no hope.

Elevation is a hit

Elevation is here and it was awesome! We had 200 show up for the opening weekend and 27 visitors in youth alone! I can't wait to see what God is going to do through this service and I am excited about next week. The band is in high gear learning new songs, the lighting and sound bugs have been worked out, and the volunteers are incredible!

We want to know what you thought! If you made it to the service, drop us a line and let us know what you thought about it!

Inclusive vs Exclusive

Have you ever been invited by a friend to hang out with a group of people for the night? Have you ever felt like when you got there no one really cared you were there, not even the friend who invited you? That is definitely not a fun place to be. If you have ever been there, you know how awkward that can be hearing everyone talk and laugh as you try to infiltrate their world.

Have you ever been invited to hang out with people and when you got there they acted like you were a rockstar? They wanted to know all about you, wanted to include you in everything they were doing, wanted to know your opinions and stories, seemed like they really cared about you. Its a great feeling!

Now, if you had your choice which would you choose? To be excluded or included? My money is on included. Why? Because we want to feel like we belong, like we are accepted, like we are wanted. Every one of us wants to feel that way! Do you realize that you can impact anyone and everyone you meet by simply being inclusive? By simply trying to get to know people? You can change a life forever by being a friend to someone!

I knew a guy in High School that no one wanted to be around. He was different, he acted strange, sometimes he smelled bad, he had ratty clothes, and he had huge curly hair. You know I never reached out to him or tried to include him in anything I did. To this day I regret that. I regret being that selfish. I was to concerned with fitting in myself that I never reached out.

Its sad, but we all act like that don't we. We all can be pretty self centered at times. We all think about ourselves first. So here is the challenge. Not just for your youth group, or church, but for every aspect of your life. Don't compartmentalize this. Don't apply this half-heartedly, don't blow this off. The challenge is simple. Look for ways to be inclusive! Look for ways to bring people in! Look for ways to make an impact that could last for eternity!

Its your choice. Just remember what its like to be excluded. Be a family, be a friend, be inclusive.

Elevation

Well its almost here. Elevation, our third worship service in the FLC is right around the corner. I believe that this service will catapult us to a whole new level around here and I know it will be something you guys will want to be a part of! The gym will look completely different with a permanent platform, a really nice sound system, a band, and some sweet lights. I might even through in a fog machine every once in a while. To put it simply, its going to rock! I am sure some faces will be melted! So here is the skinny on this new service. It kicks off Sunday, August 24th at 12:30. There will be free coffee, flat screen tv’s and sweet tables and sofas to relax at before the service. There will be two projectors, subwoofers, line array speakers (line array means crazy awesome), and a live band every week. So, get ready to grab your friends and get them here for a totally unique worship experience. See you at Elevation.

The deal with family

So the post on family has gotten some pretty interesting responses. Keep em coming. Thats what this is all about. You guys have a voice.

So what is the deal with all this family talk? Well, I have been in Youth Ministry going on 5 years now and I have seen one common thread throughout all the churches I have visited, worked at, studied, and spoken at. The churches that grow, that impact their world, that truly love people, are truly family.

Family is so much more than a word. It is a unity, a closeness, an openness that allows people to talk about how they feel, hold each other up, and hold each other accountable.

I love my wife. She is the most amazing and brilliant woman I have ever known. She is my best friend. We can share deep feelings, we support each other above all else, and we keep each other pointed in the right direction (she is REALLY good at that). Thats really what family is all about.

Another aspect of family is people. Every family has one thing in common. People. That means one thing. Families are never perfect. As much as I love my wife, I still fight selfishness and we still have our bad days. Sometimes we fight, but we always, always, work to heal our relationship.

Our youth group is made up of a lot of people. We will never be perfect, but we should always, always, work to keep our relationships strong. Sometimes that means doing hard things, but it always involves love.

Bottom line, the rest of the world will know we are Christians by our love. Not only for the lost, for those who don't know Christ, but for each other. So family is this. That we do not consider ourselves greater than everyone else, but consider others needs as more important than our own. That is giving, that is selfless, that is love, and that is family.

Our current series at Eikon has been incredible and we have so much more to talk about. You guys are all asking some tough and honest questions regarding sex and I am proud of how you guys are applying this study to your lives. So this is your chance. Family.

This word could be one of the most powerful and meaningful words in the world. In any language, culture, or country that word carries heavy meaning.

Family.

Its what we all want to be a part of. Its what we were created for.

I have a great family. I have a loving and beautiful wife, two adorable kids, a great mom and dad, a terrific sister, and 80 students at Eikon. Thats right, 80 students at Eikon.

To all my students, you are my family! I love you guys to death and I want to see each of you grow into young men and women of God. I will go as far as you want to go in your walk with Christ and I will encourage, equip, push, and help you grow in your faith and live it out every day. I am here for you guys, I love you guys, I am praying for you guys.

So this is your place. This is your family living room. This is were you can vent, talk about a current series, share your story, care for each other, and just be family.
